Living the Dream
Before the summer, our Executive Headteacher, Sally Alexander, took to the stage at Bath Abbey to play the cello solo in Matthew Coleridge’s Requiem with the Fulltone Symphony Orchestra. And in the audience that night was the composer himself.
Matthew Coleridge is one of the UK’s most exciting choral composers. His Requiem, described by Classic FM as a “modern choral classic”, regularly appears in its annual Hall of Fame top 100, and it has been performed more than 140 times around the world. It’s an intensely beautiful, deeply moving piece, with the solo cello weaving through it like a voice of its own. BBC Music Magazine said it “reaches into the soul and lifts it skyward”.
At Kimichi, music isn’t a subject we teach from a textbook. Our staff are working musicians who rehearse, perform and still get nervous before a big solo, just like our pupils. When our young people see their teachers on stage in places like Bath Abbey, they see that a life in music is real, and that it’s within their reach too.
