Beyond the Classroom? At Kimichi, It Is the Classroom

At many schools, enrichment is something that happens after the bell rings. At Kimichi, it is woven into the fabric of school life. We believe that education should be lived, experienced and explored – not confined to four walls.

Our students create and lead clubs, pursue their passions before school, take part in democratic decision-making through Student Parliament, perform in ensembles and productions, and contribute to a vibrant school community where their voices genuinely matter. Leadership is not reserved for a select few; it is something every student is encouraged to develop.

Music remains at the heart of everything we do. Students have opportunities to perform regularly, work alongside professional musicians, participate in concerts and ensembles, and experience music as a living, collaborative art form. The renowned Kimichi Symphony Orchestra and our wider performance programme provide opportunities that are rarely found in schools of our size. (Wikipedia)

Learning also extends far beyond Birmingham. Our students have travelled across the UK and internationally, experiencing first-hand the people, places and ideas that bring learning to life. Recent years have seen students explore the dramatic landscapes of Iceland, stand between tectonic plates, witness geothermal activity, and engage with science and geography in ways no textbook could replicate. We believe that citizenship is best learned through participation. Whether visiting Parliament, debating issues through Student Parliament, organising charitable projects, representing the school publicly, or helping shape decisions within the community, students learn that their opinions matter and that they can make a difference. Residential visits, cultural experiences, concerts, performances, leadership opportunities, clubs, community projects and international travel are not “extras” bolted onto the curriculum. They are the curriculum. They help young people develop confidence, resilience, independence, curiosity and a sense of belonging in the wider world.
